Intellectual Property & the Modern University Athlete

Texas A&M University School of Law
April 10, 2015

Intellectual property rights play an increasingly significant role in modern athletics in the university environment. Trademarks, copyrights and rights of publicity are an integral aspect of college sports. Licensing and merchandising of intellectual property rights generate substantial revenue. And the role of the university is evolving in an environment that is at once both commercial and educational.

Featuring leading scholars, practitioners, and university and athletics administrators, the IP and the Modern University Athlete symposium explores the intersection between intellectual property law and the athletes in the university system. Topics include trademark and copyright issues related to individual college athletes and teams, rights of publicity of college athletes, and the changing role of intellectual property rights in college athletics.
