WHAT ARE UNIFORM LAWS AND WHY DO THEY MATTER TO YOU?

William H. Henning
Presented by Professor Bill Henning,
Texas A&M University School of Law

A little-known organization, the Uniform Law Commission (ULC), has a profound effect on the lives of virtually all Americans. The organization drafts and sends to state legislatures for enactment acts designed to simplify the lives of individuals and to facilitate business transactions by providing consistent rules and procedures throughout the United States. The primary areas in which the organization has produced uniform acts are commercial law, family and domestic relations law, probate and trust law, real estate law, and the law governing alternate forms of dispute resolution, but there are uniform acts on a wide range of other topics. Professor Bill Henning, an expert in the uniform laws drafting process and former Executive Director of the ULC, will describe the process by which uniform acts are developed and will discuss some acts of particular importance to Texans, including the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act, the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act, the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, and the Uniform Emergency Volunteer Health Practitioners Act.

Continuing Legal Education credit (0.5 hours) will be offered for Texas attorneys who attend the event.
