THE BUSINESS OF MUSIC: A STUDY OF COPYRIGHT, MUSIC REVENUE, AND MUSIC OUTPUT

Lunney_Glynn1 Presented by Glynn Lunney '84, Professor, Texas A&M School of Law & Professor, Texas A&M College of Engineering

        Noon - 1:30 p.m.
        Location TBD

Professor Glynn Lunney (’84), an expert in intellectual property and the economic analysis of the law, will discuss how the copyright system does not necessarily accomplish the goals that business and society expect. Using the recording industry since the 1960s as a decades-long case study, Professor Lunney will show how changes in copyright law, technology, and markets affected industry revenues in surprising ways, raising questions of how businesses today should create and monetize their intellectual property. Did copyright achieved its stated goal, where more revenue led to more and better music? Come gain insight into the real-world operation of the copyright system and its implications for business in this fascinating talk.
