"Every student who enters Texas A&M University School of Law has the ability to be successful in law school. Just how successful will depend on the student’s work, commitment, and time management."

Get to Know Susan T. Phillips

What drew you to the law?

Initially, it was the thought of graduating with a bachelor’s in history and not having a direct career path with that degree. My classmates were either taking the MCAT or LSAT, and the LSAT was the most appropriate choice. Three months later, I was applying to law schools. No one in my family was an attorney, and I had never been around an attorney in my life. At the time, law school presented an opportunity.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

I enjoy helping students on their journeys to becoming lawyers. It has been fascinating over the years to observe the various paths, from the traditional to the nontraditional, that students have taken to become lawyers. I am amazed by the commitments and sacrifices some students have made to reach their goals.

What do you hope students gain from your courses?

I hope my students leave my courses confident that they know the law and can apply the law. I want them to learn the necessary tools to advance in law school and pass the bar.

What are you passionate about outside of the law?

Family.
