Susan Ayers

“[T]he law is a language, a set of resources for expression and social action… accordingly, the life of the lawyer is at its heart a literary one — a life both of reading the compositions of others (especially those authoritative compositions that declare the law) and of making compositions of one’s own.”

– James B. White

Get to Know Susan Ayres

What drew you to the law?

My career choices as a philosophy and English major were limited. I had always been interested in debating legal issues, so law school was a natural path.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

The students, the energy in the classroom when students are engaged.

What do you hope students gain from your courses?

It really varies by course. My expectations for 1Ls taking criminal law are very different from my expectations for 3Ls taking a rigorous writing seminar.

What did you do prior to entering academia?

I worked as a judicial clerk for the Austin Court of Appeals and the Rhode Island Supreme Court. I also practiced law with McGinnis, Lochridge, and Kilgore in Austin, and then with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.

What are you passionate about outside of the law?

Literature, my family, martial arts and the arts in general.

What are your research interests?

Intersections between law, literature and culture.
